I was checking to see whether the CT results had come back for the vague abdominal-pain patient I'd noticed during handoff earlier.

Then unfamiliar text flashed across the monitor.

[Consult : General Surgery]

[Reason : r/o Ileus (* suspected bowel obstruction)]

“Huh?”

I narrowed my eyes.

They consulted surgery?

For bowel obstruction?

When I glanced over earlier, the patient's belly had been a little distended, but he was passing gas fine and said he'd had a bowel movement yesterday, too.
