Before I knew it, it was Friday.
The digital clock on the station wall blinked expressionlessly.

Yeah, this morning had been absolutely perfect.
It was so bizarrely peaceful that I could barely believe this was the ER.
My mental state was almost unnaturally calm, too.
Normally by this time, I'd be getting battered by the first wave of the day shift and already falling apart.
The reason was a mix of factors.
First, there weren't many emergency patients, and the ones who did come in usually described their symptoms clearly, so I could handle things cleanly without unnecessary guesswork or tests.
