If students had prepared thoroughly and could logically persuade their professors that their answers were plausible, professors often gave them at least a few points of partial credit, if only in recognition of their effort.
An exam was ultimately meant to evaluate students, but at its core, it was still an extension of teaching.
If a student voluntarily did supplementary study, there was no reason for a professor not to view it favorably...
