There are two kinds of clowns in the Western world on Earth.

One is the clown (Clown), the ordinary sort who performs with a smile, like Larilura. They paint their faces white and perform acrobatics or comedy.

And the other is the Pierrot (Pierrot).

A clown who never smiles, wearing a sorrowful or expressionless face throughout the performance.

Many people are afraid of Pierrots because they sometimes wear frightening makeup.

Pierrots often adopt a concept of captivating audiences with a terrifying, creepy atmosphere. Like primitive horror movies.

And so, in a world where scientific knowledge had not advanced, it was──in a sense, only natural that ‘freaks’ would turn to that as a means of making a living.

A shocking show unfolded to the sound of pounding drums.

It was a show that seemed to fly in the face of human values and common sense...
