But there was someone else who came to us as we caught our breath.

“You two. Thank you so much for visiting our circus today.”

The person who came to the private box was a middle-aged woman in a crisply pressed tailcoat.

It was less than thirty minutes before the circus began, and the ringmaster herself, Ms. Alexandra, had come to see us. I stood up in surprise.

“Oh, you didn’t have to. We would have been happy if you’d come after the circus was over.”

“I couldn’t take up any more of your busy time.”

Ms. Alexandra said with a practiced smile.

“Larilura has been placed under disciplinary restriction. She’ll perform in today’s show, but it seems she won’t be able to come see you again until tomorrow.”

“I see. I’d heard you were leaving soon.”

“Yes. A circus has to pay attention to the city’s mood. I always wish our star would understand that.”...
