A lightning-fast wake-up.

I had a mountain of work to do.

With a mountain of work piled up, my eyes opened automatically.

If this were work I hated—some rotten, miserable job—my whole body would feel like a thousand pounds as I burrowed back under the blanket.

But it wasn't like that at all.

If anything, my body felt light because it was something I wanted to get done as quickly as possible.

As always, while washing my face, I gave Ruby, who was brushing her teeth beside me, a

“Ow.”
