The original plan of the anti-Siegfried officers had been to capture or kill Siegfried and somehow hand him over to the Empire.

The reason they had not simply opened the gates and surrendered to the Imperial Army was very simple.

If they did that, there was no guarantee that their own lives and positions would be spared.

Opening the gates and surrendering to the Imperial Army was completely different from capturing Siegfried themselves, handing him over, and requesting surrender terms.

After all, Kyle Leopold's army had always projected an image of being merciful.

"Kyle Leopold won't be able to simply eliminate us if we go this far."

That was true to some extent. If Kyle slaughtered even those who surrendered, no one would willingly kneel before his army in the future.

Even Kyle Leopold would find it difficult to strike them down if his enemies acted that way.

But... the situation had changed.

After the civilian militia and the Capital Defense Division had collapsed miserably at Narvia, there was no room left for such calculations...
