Steel armor plates that had not suffered the slightest damage despite the barrage of machine-gun fire. Tracks that crushed everything beneath them as the tank advanced. And a cannon that had just torn apart a machine-gun nest.

The Republic Marines' bodies froze solid at the sight of the faintly rising smoke, as though a man-eating monster were smacking its lips after a meal.
