When I was Kim Siwoo, a Korean, rather than Gilliam Everchess, my grades throughout my school years were right around average to slightly above average.

If there were twenty students in my class, I’d usually rank somewhere between seventh and eleventh.

If I got lucky with my guesses, I could climb as high as fifth; if I was unlucky, I’d drop to around thirteenth… That was about it.

I was pretty good, but nowhere near the top of the whole school.

And so.

When I heard that a list of top students had been posted, I didn’t even consider the possibility that my name would be on it.

So I started scanning up from the bottom.
