The two were looking down over the sunset-bathed capital from the bell tower atop a cathedral.

“So you mean this is meaningful?”
Asterion, filled with melancholy rather than his usual solemn or kindly-grandfather demeanor, nodded.
“Oh, if you put it that way, will the Executor understand? The elder did speak indirectly, but in any case, he means to say, ‘Do as you please.’”
“How dare a youngster barely four thousand years old presume to judge me as he pleases?”
“So was I wrong? You eight-thousand-year-old geezer.”
