The Last Dance Before Midnight
A masked dragon asks the lanternwright for one slow dance
Luri's actions upon infiltrating the Imperial Palace might have seemed impulsive.
Yet in truth, they were closer to rational actions grounded in logic.
Breaking the magic circle and summoning every mage and knight was meant to make them realize how serious the situation was and heighten their vigilance.
It was just a small warning, showing what might happen if the dragon's consort were injured.
That was why Luri brought out everything she normally kept hidden.
Her tail, horns, and even her four eyes.
Once the other side realized she was someone they could reason with, its commander would ask Luri where she belonged.
Luri would answer that she was Grand Duke Valdrova's attendant, and then they could talk.
‘Lord Ferda will be safe anyway.’
Even if he had been injured inside the Imperial Palace, there would be priests stationed there.
Every one of them possessed holy power on the level of a bishop, so healing an injured Ferda would be no trouble at all.
‘And yet…….’
That thought kept circling through Luri's mind.
She couldn't feel at ease.
Just as immortals and mortals were different, dragon spawn and humans were different as well.
What if his injuries were so severe that he couldn't wake up even after his wounds were healed?
What if some demon in the Sealed Vault had cursed him?
What if he had been unable to resist its temptation and made some outrageous contract?
Those worries, each one capable of leading to Valdrova's sorrow, tangled her thoughts.
A master's concern was a servant's concern as well.
Luri did not let that anxiety sway her; she held on to reason until the very end.
Luri knew very well that emotion would be of no help in this situation.
So Luri cut down every Imperial Palace garden blocking her path, opening a way forward.
After she even shattered the wall of rose vines, she saw the knights who had been making all that noise waiting to meet her.
Among them, Luri spotted a familiar man as well.
‘Ferda.’
Gray hair and blue eyes.
He was tall, but his body was slender.
Yet he had a solemn expression that did not suit his age.
Ferda Valdrova.
Everything that met her eyes was Ferda himself, exactly as she knew him.
Contrary to the report that he had been injured, he looked perfectly unharmed.
‘He's safe.’
In that moment, she felt the worries lodged in her heart drain away.
With her worries gone, she should have felt relieved.
But it was a little different from the relief she usually felt.
The satisfaction of watching caked-on grime come away.
The relief of dispelling an anxiety that had been driving her mad.
What filled Luri's heart was neither of those two.
