The difference between base stats and buffs.
For example, if you look at my Agility stat, even though I raised it to 14 with all kinds of elixirs and exercise, the effective value is only 7.
But if I raise it by 1 with a buff, the -50% doesn't apply; it simply increases by a pure 1, becoming 8.
The reason is simple. Traits, elixirs, and exercise all act within my body, so they interact with one another, whereas Mana's power comes from outside, so it isn't affected.
Stats gained from equipment or artifacts work similarly: they aren't affected by existing Traits and are simply added together.
"This is why I chose the priest class and raise my stats this way. It's far more efficient to boldly abandon stats that are difficult to raise because of a negative Trait and make up for them with equipment and buffs."
