They say she has to spar to test whether she qualifies for promotion. Support-type magical girls really do have it rough.
'Well, their survival rate has increased that much compared to the old days.'
Non-combat-type magical girls play the roles expected of magical girls in their rank in areas such as defending citizens and evacuating them, but support-type magical girls only truly show their strength 'when other magical girls are present,' so their rankings have been controversial for a long time.
The problem was that the gap in the influence they could demonstrate in combat was simply too wide for the rank displayed.
By the old standards, even among A-rank support-type magical girls, one might have almost no personal combat power but be able to cast A-rank buffs, while another might combine buffing abilities with personal combat skills. Support was important, but since magical girls fundamentally had to fight Abyss Ones, there had been a lot of confusion in various respects.
When Cariel defined that ambiguous standard as 'their personal combat power while using the enhancement methods available to them,' she meant to set the minimum standard as the benchmark.
If a support-type magical girl was B-rank, it meant that she could at least perform the equivalent role of a B-rank combat-type magical girl on her own.
...And, of course, Cariel herself had proven that she met that standard.
............Or so I knew.
