The steel giant turned to look back at me when I couldn't make myself take a step forward.

Feeling Takanashi-san's gaze through the machine's camera, I reflexively looked away.

"We're just ordinary people, after all. We don't have to go that far... do we?"

Even I knew I was saying something pathetic. The truth was, I didn't want to say something like that.

But even so, I couldn't summon the courage to step into a battlefield for the sake of complete strangers.

Desperately, I piled up reasons why I should be allowed not to go fight.
