Louis raised the bell in his hand and rang it.

Since the wind was calm today, the bell's clear ring carried a long way.

Cyrus Page must be using the sound to pinpoint Monica and Louis's location. They could have moved away as soon as the bell rang, but neither of them chose to.

Monica was too slow to get very far, and she wanted to avoid using flight magic as much as possible.

(The two of us, Louis-san and I, can only use two spells between us...)

With their options so limited, spending one spell on flight magic would be a bad move.

Beside Monica, Louis chanted a detection spell. A solid choice.

In magic battles, some mages approach on foot without using magic until the last possible moment to avoid detection, but that wouldn't mean much against Monica, who could cast without chanting.

If they started chanting after drawing near, they'd fall prey to Monica's unchanted magic.

Cyrus would probably activate a spell from a distance, then close in all at once...
