Chen Ju struggled to sit up and tried to smile, but the movement tugged at his wounds, and the corners of his mouth drooped again. Leaning against the wall, he clutched his chest. It hurt terribly, as if a thorn were stabbing the flesh inside it.
“Are you really okay?” Zhou Xue'er asked, watching Chen Ju anxiously.
“I really am,” Chen Ju said, rallying and managing a smile. “I only got punched twice. I-I hit him back, too.”
Zhou Xue'er studied Chen Ju's face. Apart from his pallor, he really didn't seem to be in any danger. Only then did she breathe a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness. You scared me to death!”
As she spoke, she gave Chen Ju a shove and complained, “You have no idea how scared I was when I saw you lying here without moving. I thought you were dead! If Big Brother Zhou finds out I brought you out and something like this happened, he'll never speak to me again!”
Chen Ju frowned and clutched the spot where she'd pushed him. He managed a faint smile and apologized. “I'm sorry for scaring you.”
Zhou Xue'er stopped and looked at Chen Ju. “Why are you so easy to push around? Someone says a couple of things, and you apologize. This wasn't even your fault.”
Chen Ju froze, unsure what to say. He didn't know why he'd apologized, either. At first, he'd thought that if he apologized, he wouldn't get hit or yelled at. After a while, it had become a habit.
“Was that your uncle? Why did he hit you?” Zhou Xue'er sat down beside Chen Ju, not caring in the least that dust might get on her pants.
Chen Ju lowered his head. His whole body hurt. After a few seconds of silence, he nodded and looked at Zhou Xue'er pleadingly. “Could you please not tell Jiang Zhou about what happened today?”...
