When Liu Meng returned to Su Meier’s cave abode, she felt as though nothing had changed.
The familiar, cloyingly sweet scent still filled the air. On the cold, damp stone walls, dancing candlelight stretched her shadow into a long, twisted shape.
She made her way through without hindrance. The white-masked maidservants who had once seemed incomparably powerful now all bowed respectfully when they saw her, stepping aside to let her pass.
Liu Meng kept her eyes forward and walked straight into the spacious, empty hall.
On the raised platform, Su Meier was just as she had been at their first meeting, reclining lazily on a couch carved from a single piece of warm jade.
She wore a red gauze robe as thin as a cicada’s wing, through which her snow-white skin was faintly visible. A smile that was not quite a smile played on her peerlessly beautiful face, as if she had been waiting there for some time.
“You’re back?” Su Meier didn’t even open her eyes. She merely spoke in her languid, bewitching voice.
Her tone gave no hint of anger or pleasure, yet Liu Meng’s heart suddenly tightened.
“Your disciple Liu Meng pays her respects to Master.” Liu Meng knelt on one knee and lowered her head respectfully.
Only then did Su Meier slowly open her captivating phoenix eyes. Her gaze fell on Liu Meng, yet seemed to look somewhere far beyond her...
