The suspicious building discovered by Hero Conrad Williams, who had brought along the flame demonkin Tsubaki, stood beside the Second Raikon Canal.

The canal flowing through the outskirts of Wangoi City was murky, dark green, and too opaque to see the bottom. The water seemed shallow, however, and whenever Tsubaki innocently tapped and stirred the surface with a branch she had picked up, mud from the bottom billowed up, spreading brownish bubbles across the water.

"Tsubaki, put the branch down for a moment. Focus. Can you see that building? The one with the large green roof?"

"Mi. The one next to the white roof?"

"That's right. What kind of magic power do you sense coming from that building?"

At Conrad's prompting, Tsubaki closed her eyes and stood rigid like a statue, concentrating. Even the flames cheerfully flickering around her body quieted, as though responding to her mind.

After a little while, Tsubaki opened her eyes, and the flames began flickering again. The demonkin who had searched for magic power tilted her head in puzzlement.

"Ordinary. Magic power for about thirty people. But all ordinary. Seems weak."

"That's true. But isn't it too ordinary? Try searching again."

"Mi? Miiii... Mi! Got it! Their magic power is all exactly the same. Exactly 1K!"...
