The inn room wasn’t very large. It had two single beds and a space for washing up, but no toilet. The decor was simple, and the layout was just right for two people.
Aside from a painting, the wall had only one window. It wasn’t very wide—about as wide as Yin Xiu’s shoulders—but from it, he could see the town square and the statue of the woman. The room had a surprisingly good view, looking directly out onto the square.
“Big Brother, this painting is so strange.” The little girl had been bouncing around the room ever since they entered, but now she suddenly pointed at the picture on the wall.
It showed a beautiful woman with her eyes closed. Her golden hair was bright and radiant, her skin fair, and her hands folded over her chest in what looked like a prayerful pose. The image was so lifelike.
The first thing Yin Xiu had noticed when he entered was a similar painting on the wall of the lobby downstairs. But instead of a woman, it showed a delicate-looking young man with his eyes closed in the same way.
Paintings of the same kind hung throughout the corridors and by the staircases. They depicted both men and women, and people of all ages. The one thing they had in common was that their eyes were all closed.
Yin Xiu thought of one of the rules: Do not gaze at the figures in the portraits inside the house for too long, and do not respond to their voices.
First of all, how could you look someone in the eye when their eyes were closed?
And then there were the voices. One glance at the rules was enough to confirm that none of the portraits in the house were ordinary, yet they were everywhere.
“What’s strange about it?” Yin Xiu asked softly, wanting to see what the little girl noticed...
