Since then, we'd both consciously avoided talking about anything sexual, so things between us had naturally gone back to how they used to be.
Of course, I'd taken the opportunity to try to find out what Derek was into, but I couldn't figure out where he'd moved his hiding place.

But this winter was unusual—in Derek's words, the monsters' stirrings had been exceptionally quiet, or, as I'd put it, a brief but spectacular flare-up.
The monsters had been more active than usual right when we went on the inspection tour, but strangely, after a few days, they'd gone back to about their usual level of activity.
They said that even the commotion during the last incident would've been manageable under normal circumstances if that mercenary hadn't neglected his watch.
At this point, it was hard to tell whether the latest stirrings had been milder than the previous ones, or whether the monsters had just been temporarily more active than usual...
