There is a saying. To cover up a lie, you have to tell a bigger lie.
It originally means that once you tell a lie, you end up telling another lie to avoid getting caught, and as the lies you use to cover your tracks gradually snowball, they become too much to handle, so you shouldn’t lie to begin with. People should live truthfully! It’s a saying that contains such a lesson.
