I was flustered, but thinking it over carefully, I realized the patrol officer’s logical process made sense.
I had said, “I am just doing my job here.”
I meant it sincerely in the sense that being an apprentice bartender at Dragon’s Lair was my job, but the patrol officer thought of me as a high-ranking executive of the Dusk Watch. There was no way my words would be taken literally.
What business would a high-level inspector of the Dusk Watch have lying in ambush at a bar on the outskirts? There was a much more plausible answer than hypotheses like, “Because the bar’s boss is suspicious,' or “Because the valedictorian bartender is secretive.”
“A Red-grade terrorist - the Ascetic - has appeared nearby, and he must be caught.”
The patrol officer herself came all the way to Dragon’s Lair to investigate matters related to the Ascetic and ran into me, so her train of thought naturally had to flow in that direction.
Flustered, I tried to shake my head at first, but the patrol officer smiled with full realization and composure, as if she knew everything.
“There is no need to deny it. It’s nothing more than a simple deduction. Is there any other reason for you to be here?”
Then, the sight of her sipping her Espresso Martini as if she had accomplished something somehow pissed me off.
Simple deduction my ass, she was completely barking up the wrong tree...
