Crete, an island spanning the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas in southern Greece, was famous as a travel destination visited by millions of foreign tourists every year.

Endless emerald beaches stretched out in beauty, with the horizon continuing beyond them.

There was also the high mountain range stretching from east to west, and the Samaria Gorge, so dizzying that merely looking at it made one's head spin.

Besides such beautiful natural scenery, more than a few people visited Crete after being captivated by its picturesque cityscapes.

Until only fifty years ago.
