The “sustainable piracy” meta that the author Ulysses created through his protagonist Francis Drake drew an unexpected response.
The Empire’s law and order was relatively stable, but beyond its borders there were still places where madmen like the so-called Napoleons ran wild, and even wastelands occupied by bands of mounted bandits.
“Is he…… really a bad guy?”
“No matter how precious gold and jewels are, life is still the most important thing……”
“I almost dropped the novel if he had massacred everyone here, but at least he elevated it into humor.”
For the most part, the response was positive.
Drake had been doing insane things throughout the novel—not just for a day or two—and whenever he got bored, he would charge to the front, get riddled with bullets, and end up groaning in agony.
Even his willingness to show generous mercy to the people of Spain, an enemy nation, left quite an impression on the readers.
Of course, there were also some less conventional reactions.
