Young Count Ambard, Barney Jones, who had only inherited his territory the previous month, was an extremely busy man.

In any case, there were so many duties to learn and people to greet that he begrudged every moment spent resting. The reason he was leaving his office to go out was to inspect the city.

His territory was home to many engineers, and it would be no exaggeration to say that its income from industry and magical-device development ranked among the top three in the kingdom.

If the Empire was putting its efforts into medical magic, then the Kingdom of Ridill was putting its efforts into magical-device development. Even within the Kingdom of Ridill, there were not many workshops that handled large-scale magical devices, such as industrial magical devices.

And Count Ambard's territory was home to more workshops producing industrial magical devices than anywhere else.

The workshop Barney was about to visit was one of those that made specialized magical devices.

A few days earlier.

Barney's lifelong rival and one of the Seven Sages, the Silent Witch Monica Everett, had suddenly barged into Barney's estate and announced that she wanted to borrow a magical-device workshop.

Apparently, she had something she wanted to make in secret, but renting an entire workshop for it meant this was no trivial matter.

Even so, when Monica, one of the Seven Sages, asked him for help in his capacity as Count Ambard, Barney didn't mind. Of course, he found it galling to help for free, so he demanded proper compensation...
