After making his wish, he took a deep breath and blew out the candles. Watching smoke curl from the extinguished wicks, he looked up at Jiang Zhou and said earnestly, “Jiang Zhou, thank you.”

Jiang Zhou looked away. “It’s nothing. I’m just fulfilling my obligations under the contract.”

Chen Ju nodded and said softly, “I-I know. I’m still very grateful to you.”

“Hurry up and eat the cake. Stop dawdling.” Jiang Zhou sat back down, his expression turning just a little strange.

But Chen Ju’s attention was entirely on the cake, and he didn’t notice. He carefully cut two slices, then pushed the first one in front of Jiang Zhou. With a shy smile, he said obediently, “Jiang Zhou, this one’s for you.”

Jiang Zhou looked at the cake, then at the slice in front of Chen Ju. The two portions were quite different in size.

“I want yours.” Jiang Zhou gestured toward it with his eyes.
