Yesterday's Enemy Is Today's Friend

I went out onto the lake at night with Akira, towing a brightly shining fish-attracting light behind our boat to lure out the kraken.

Just as I'd planned, the monster showed itself, confirming beyond a doubt that there really was a kraken.

The monster that appeared was missing one leg, so it was undoubtedly the same one we'd encountered.

We tossed a marker buoy into the spot where we'd encountered it, then hurried home.

That gave us a rough idea of where the enemy was.

We'd finished marking the location, but if the kraken moved a long way, we'd have to start all over again...

The root of the problem was that this lake was simply too big.

All we could do was hope it stayed put.

If we couldn't track it down, we'd be forced to fight at night, towing the fish-attracting light and waiting to intercept it.

I wanted to avoid that if possible...
