Once they were in the car, Jiang Zhou kept a cold expression the whole way and didn’t say a word. Chen Ju kept his head down as tears inexplicably rolled down one after another, pattering onto his fingers.
Not wanting Jiang Zhou to notice, Chen Ju silently held back his sobs, wiping his face again and again with his sleeve.
They soon arrived at their place. Jiang Zhou didn’t get out of the car, but said quietly, “I’m not coming back to sleep tonight. Go inside first.”
Chen Ju froze for a moment, then lowered his head and gave a soft “Mm.” The window rolled up and the car started, driving away in front of him. A breeze stirred the hair on his forehead before it gently fell again, like feathers settling to the ground.
The tears filling Chen Ju’s eyes finally slipped out of control and rolled down his cheeks.
“It’s okay, it’s okay.” Chen Ju patted his chest, trying to comfort himself, but it felt stuffy and painful, as though a huge stone were weighing on it and making it hard to breathe.
Just wait a little longer. Once he got Mom out, everything would be all right, so this was nothing.
It’s okay, it’s okay. I’ll feel better after I sleep.
Chen Ju took a deep breath and slapped his cheeks hard. His fair skin immediately turned bright red, the same color as his eyes and nose. Feeling a little better, he turned and went into the building.
He had to go to work early tomorrow. And today, he’d had hot pot with Brother Qing and Brother Yan and even had drinks. Those were all happy things to think about. It was his own fault for going back to the house for no reason; otherwise, none of this would’ve happened, and he wouldn’t have upset Jiang Zhou...
